Boat Class
All this week, 40 middle - and high- school students from Milwaukee are building wooden boats, polishing their math skills, learning about the skilled trades, and meeting adults from a wide variety of career fields. All Hands Boatworks is proud to be a core partner in the 2nd annual Builders Camp organized by the Building2Learn Consortium.
First layer bottom attached. Half dozen screws, whole bunch of 1" ss staples and epoxy. Tomorrow, router magic.

Otter
Walk around video of Otter, a self designed and built camping boat highly influenced by Jim Michalak's Sow's Ear design. Apologies in advance for the length of the video. I get going and I just can't stop. I was inspired to create this video after seeing Joe Stromski's AF4 walk around. Thanks again Joe.

Tryst
I posted a photo of Peet's 10ft 2 sheet ply Duo dinghy a couple of weeks ago. It was the first boat he had ever built. Now, like so many people (including me) he has converted it to the Tryst trimaran, although slightly modified from the original drawings. He comments " I used simple ex-army surplus fibr glass tent poles for the crossbeams). It works well for my larger body (105kg) and I have been out with my son (he is 95kg) and we never had a problem with swamping the boat. The wind was strong and the swells high on Lake Ontario.
Building the Duo has taught me the basic skills I needed, and also very strongly re-enforced the principle of not making the boat stronger (read heavier !!!) than the original design. I would strongly suggest that all novices start with a small design before starting on their second boat!"
He also reported that he is just started to build his 24ft Eagle catamaran. See more here.
So I didn't sail the Zeta at the weekend, something else, equally important, happened. But today we finally got the boat assembled ready to sail. Some of you may have seen this sail before! The Zeta is the fourth boat its been on in the last 20 years It's all pretty light - Jetti and I can lift the whole boat quite easily. I will weigh it properly soon. It is also surprisingly stiff. Much less flexible than say a Hobie cat More on Zeta here.
