The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is pleased to offer a traditionally-built small boat for sale.

The Davis Boat is a fourteen foot open boat built to lines taken from an original owned by the Seattle-based Center for Wooden Boats. This new boat is available for sale now.

These boats were originally designed and built by the Davis family of Metlakatla AK for use in the inshore fisheries along the many bays and inlets of Southeast Alaska, and were renowned for their toughness and flexibility.  Davis boats of this style were built from the very early 1900's through about 1960 or so.  

This boat is traditionally built of red cedar carvel planking over white oak frames on a sapele backbone. It is oiled inside for easy maintenance and painted an attractive light gray with a teal blue sheer plank on the outside.  

The boat was designed to be easy to row and handle. It is not equipped with a sailing rig. It comes complete with hand-crafted spruce oars tailored to the boat.  

This Davis Boat is available for sale now at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding.

The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is pleased to offer a traditionally-built small boat for sale.

The CARPENTER is an eighteen foot open boat built to designer L.F. Herreshoff’s 1929 lines published in his book Sensible Cruising Designs (reprinted in 1973 by International Marine and many times thereafter). It will be sold by the School when it is completed in early summer 2008.

Built of the highest quality marine plywood and WEST System epoxy, CARPENTER is one of the boats being built this spring by the students in the Contemporary boatbuilding Class at the School. It will be powered by a simple two-masted lug rig and will include provisions for a small outboard motor in a well.

In the designer’s words, “…(CARPENTER) is sort of a cross between a whaleboat and a dory…an admirable sea boat…(and) would obviously carry quite a load through rough water with considerable ease.” A crew of three and their gear could be easily accommodated.

The boat was designed to be easy to sail and row, and with its very shallow draft, would make an admirable beach camping craft, qualities that today would make CARPENTER a great Raid boat with her excellent carrying capacity, ability to be easily beached, and simple two-masted rig.
