"Emily Cooney"

by Brian Cuthbert

I heard you featured my schooner "Emily Cooney" in Duckworks. Here are more pics.

I built the schooner in 2003. It took about 9 months. She is plank on frame, hull is cedar, deck and bulwarks are teak. The design is from Chapelle's American Fishing Schooners Page 232 "Emily Cooney".

She is slightly deeper in the water than the design as I prefer to build my boats without keel extensions. The rudder is somewhat larger than the plan also.

Sails are 3oz sailcloth stained with a mixture of tar and turps to give that used look. She has sail control on the forsail and main only, the jibs are set for windward work.

I'm fairly pleased with her performance and she compares well with other boats. I sail with other like minded people at a local pond (Mark Steeles group)
