Hi Chuck
Well My son Wayne and his girl friend started the
boat in 1995. He and I designed the vessel which is
constructed of fir plywood, stitch and glue West System
epoxy, glassed, and then another layer of plywood
screwed to that and heavily glassed, the decks are
built the same way.
She is a Full rigged ship (squares on
all three masts). A yacht on the inside, with a bath
tub, fireplace, full size mattress in both master
and guest state rooms, marble counter tops in galley,
state rooms and heads, 200 gallons of fresh water.
Her power is a 40 hp electric motor and a large battery
bank, and we have a 4kw diesel generator on deck.
The standing rigging is stainless steel and the running
rigging is nylon, her mast hardware and fittings are
5086 aluminum, all of which is authentic 18th century
stuff I think.
When Wayne and his girl friend broke
up, He didn't have the heart to finish the project
which was at that time just a rough hull and most
of the deck. My wife and I talked about it and didn't
want the boat Wayne had spent so much time on to languish
or be sold to someone who wouldn't finish her, so
we bought her from Wayne.
I changed her from what Wayne had originally
had as a diesel auxiliary, to a regenerating electric
drive (power to turn the prop with electric motor,
then when sailing, the prop turning and refilling
the battery bank of 12 8Ds). The electric motor is
40 HP at 144 volts DC.
My wife and I hope to retire on the ship and sail
the inside passage to Alaska, then return and outfit
for open waters and head for Hawaii where we have
a Grandson who teaches High school. If our health
remains good we might do the south Pacific before
we head back to Puget Sound.
We should be able to handle the ship
by ourselves, we have a lot of money tied up in Harkin
roller reefing systems for all sails, however there
are redundant systems for handling the ship by hand.
She sleeps 4 in a master stateroom and a VIP, but
when we have grand kids aboard they can sleep in the
salon and pilot house and on the quarter deck settee,
we should be able to entertain as many as 20 people
dock side.
I retire in a year and a half, that
is our goal for launch. The photos here were taken
this fall. We are now working on the steering systems,
and over Thanksgiving my son Eddie and I are going
to glass in the 6 fresh water tanks, 230 gallons,
and the last of the keelson structure.
